A total of 50 shift workers were evacuated from the submarine Victorious after a leak of gas.

A team of archaeologists believed they had discovered a cache of Saxon artifacts near Gleaston Water Mill. The finds included pottery and horse bones.

A terrier called Guinness was rescued from a 250ft disused copper mine shaft at Coniston after somehow surviving for a month on just water. The rescue was made by members of the Lancaster Caving and Mine Research Society.
