There was plenty of praise for St James' Junior School from Ofsted inspectors who said the Barrow school, in Blake Street, "oozes a sense of joy and celebration".

Barrow shipwright Harold McGinley received the MBE from the Queen at Buckingham Palace.

The new Suzuki 50 was £97 from motorcycle dealer Eddie Crooks, in Crellin Street, Barrow. It offered fuel economy of 140 miles to the gallon and cost just £3 a year for insurance.
