Cumbria County Council was considering shutting its Askam and Barrow Island libraries as part of a wide-ranging package of cuts designed to keep council tax rises to 3.5 per cent.

Barrow Shipyard Band presented its Christmas Celebration concert at Forum 28 in Barrow.

A detached house at Trinkeld Avenue, Swarthmoor, was offered for sale at £230,000. A semi-detached house in Slop Lane, Stainton, was £224,950.

Undercover police officers were to mingle with South Cumbrian festive revellers as part of a crackdown on alcohol-related violence. It was called Operation Siskin and was funded with £20,000 from the Home Office.
