10 YEARS AGO

Rising fuel costs and the effect of the credit crunch had combined to hit visitor numbers to the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway.

A semi-detached house at Chapelfield, North Scale, Walney, was offered for sale at £163,000. Another semi at Bewley Steps, Barrow, was £159,950.

Barrow was to host more than 100 delegates for a major defence conference in January. Speakers would include Barrow MP and Defence Secretary John Hutton.

Barrow mayor Cllr Dave Roberts officially opened the new flood defence tank at Ramsden Square after a two-year building project. It could hold enough water for five Olympic swimming pools.

25 YEARS AGO

One-eyed Barnaby, the resident cat at Barrow's Victoria Park Hotel, had gone missing. New hotel owner, Irene Alexander, from Aberdeen, offered a reward for the long-haired persian pet.

A modern detached house at Poplar Bank, Barrow, was offered for sale at £51,950. A terraced house at Whitehead Close, Barrow, was £37,500.

South Cumbria Health Authority was ploughing ahead with plans to merge with Lancaster to form a new Morecambe Bay Authority.

Aldingham Hall retirement home was to become a nursing home for up to 30 patients. The hall was owned by Risedale estates.

50 YEARS AGO

You could dance to music from The Metroes at a dance being held in Newton Social Club, near Dalton. Tickets were 25p.

A petition signed by 120 Barrow teenagers called on the town to offer more facilities for youngsters.
