SOUTH Cumbrians – many weakened by the effects of military service or food rationing — were being killed in alarming numbers by flu a century ago.

The effect of this deadly world-wide epidemic is explored as part of an exhibition at the City Museum, Lancaster called For The Fallen.

Many households in places like Millom, Barrow and Ulverston saw more than one death – frequently of children and adults aged under 30.

It notes that 250,000 people were killed by flu in the United Kingdom.

The exhibition on daily life after the end of the First World War can be seen until March 24 on Tuesdays to Sundays, from 10am to 5pm.
