A FURNESS school came up with its own way to encourage youngsters to act as good as gold.
The ABC scheme was the name of a new initiative at North Walney Primary School which rewarded model behaviour among the children.
The Mail on Thursday, October 10, in 1996, noted: "Teachers devised their own system of rewards, giving pupils an A for good attitude, a B for good behaviour and a C for a caring attitude to others.
"Children receive small stickers with the appropriate letter for each good deed or piece of work and can claim a larger sticker after five awards.
"Children in the junior years must have at least one of each letter among their five stickers."
Continued success would lead to the presentation of a certificate at one of the school's regular "praising assemblies".
Headteacher John Sharples said: "We know praise and encouragement are great motivators.
"We are just as keen to reward good behaviour or a caring nature towards others in our community."
