BOSSES at Cumbria County Council have accepted responsibility for the confusion after a road closure sign was not taken down.
The A595 between Grizebeck and Broughton will be shut until Friday from 7pm to 5am for roadworks.
But motorists reported the road was actually shut at Lowick on the A5092 last night, meaning a long detour via the A590 for people heading towards Broughton and Millom.
A spokesman for Cumbria County Council said: “The confusion has come from contractors not taking the road closure down during the day.
“We have requested that the sign will not be left out to avoid a repeat on Tuesday night.
“The work on the A595, which is resurfacing and line painting should be completed by Friday.
“Diversions are in place between A593 and A5084.”
