THE future of a historic pub is up in limbo after a meeting concluded that no final decision has been made.

The Derby Arms in Great Urswick potentially pulled it's last pint on Sunday as the pub closed for the foreseeable future.

The meeting took place on Tuesday with locals expressing their concern on the situation.

Denise Chamberlain, a parish councillor in Great Urswick, said the closure of the pub would be catastrophic for the community.

She said the meeting was encouraging but a future on the pub has not been decided.

She said: "It was a constructive meeting but we did not get any further information than what we already know.

"The brewery has a code of conduct to give landlords a living wage under Robinsons.

“But the living wage is not being met with the Derby Arms and they are not convinced it can make money to survive under the current plan.

“However they were adamant they have not made a decision on the future of the pub."

Councillor Chamberlain, who lives 50 yards away from the Derby Arms, added that the pub was a hub for everyone.

She wants the building to be kept as a pub in the long term and said the brewery needs to look at alternative ways for business.

She said: “The pub will definitely be shut for the short term, but they need to look at what business could be created for the pub and the accommodation.

“The meeting with Robinson’s was sincere and sensible, they highlighted a commitment to keep involved with the committee regarding the future of the pub.

A spokesperson on behalf of Robinsons Brewery said: “Members of Robinsons Brewery met with councillors and community members to listen to the concerns of the local residents over the future of the Derby Arms.

"The challenges with the trade at the Derby Arms were discussed in detail and it was confirmed the Company are due to undertake a full and extensive review of the business within the coming weeks.

"Robinsons confirmed their commitment to keep the community fully updated on the future of the property."
