A WALNEY schoolgirl was amazed to be told she had won a national drawing competition live on children's BBC.
The Mail, on May 27 in 1995, noted: "Jane Dixon, 12, a pupil at Walney School, had entered a competition to design a flag for the children's programme Pirates.
"She sent off her design of a black flag with a skeleton parrot on it a few months ago."
News of her win came in a telephone call which was live on air with a children's presenter.
Pirates was about a family of pirates who gave up the high seas for a life in suburbia and the winning flag would feature on the set of the show in the next series.
The article noted: "Jane is getting an expenses-paid trip to London to meet the cast and see the programme being filmed."
