1 NORTHERLY or Northwest is the latest exhibition to grace the cherished walls of Brantwood. Running at the former Coniston home of John Ruskin through until February 10, it showcases the work of Catriona Taylor. Incorporating maps and words of the shipping forecast, Catriona’s paintings are inspired by the Scottish coastline and people’s close relationship with the sea. Among her most recent exhibitions was a summer exhibition at Cameron Contemporary Art, at Brighton. Northerly or Northwest is open Wednesday until Sunday, 10.30am-4pm.

2 STUNNING contemporary furniture designed and made in Cumbria will go on show at Blackwell, The Arts and Crafts House, in the New Year. A Design Lineage: The Rusland Movement at Blackwell opens on January 18 featuring pieces inspired by the Arts and Crafts Movement and Blackwell itself, sketched, realised in 3D models and crafted in a Cumbrian studio just 20 minutes from Blackwell. Select pieces will go on display throughout Blackwell, and will include an elegant cocktail cabinet, sofa and chair, desk, sideboard, bedside table, mirror and drawer unit.

3 SOUTH Lakes Arts Collective is back at The Dock Museum with Without Boundaries, running at the Barrow venue until January 16. Subjects range from Surrealist to detailed anatomical studies, representational to the abstract and conceptual art. There is a wide mix of artists, including Jan Gardner, guest artist this year with three large scale paintings; and Arnside-based Gillian Slater has also put an interactive sculpture into the exhibition. Entitled Words can Break Us, Make Us and Take Us; the piece is made out of cotton, cloth, collage and brusho dye. Open Wednesday to Sunday, 11pm-4pm.

4 BEACH Hut Gallery at Kents Bank Station, Grange-over-Sands, hosts the Small Picture Show until January 6, featuring the work of 13 fine artists: Christine Baines, Tina Balmer, Kate Bentley, Daniel Cooper, Lesley Edmondson, Judy Evans, Christine Leadbetter, Clyde Olliver, Laura Pendlebury, Sally Toms, Steve Trevillion, Beverley White,and Judith Wood. Featured will be seasonal landscapes, still life paintings, drawings and printmaking, glass and ceramics, felt works and handmade books. Open Thursday to Sunday, 10.30am-4pm.

5 MOUNTAIN of Destiny: Kanchenjunga 1929 is running at the Heaton Cooper Gallery until December 31, telling of an attempt on Kanchenjunga, the world’s third highest mountain, by a German team 90 years ago. The photographs are from the private collection of the British transport officer on the expedition, and displayed at the Grasmere gallery alongside paintings of the mountain by Julian Cooper.
