A Barrow town centre building which has stood empty for more than three years looks set to be sold to a charity.

76 Duke Street was formerly the base for a local lettings agent which moved out in August 2015.

Barrow Council owns the freehold and despite attempts to let the property, it now looks set to be go for £70,000.

CancerCare North Lancashire and South Cumbria are interested, according to papers to go before the council’s executive ahead at a town hall meetingon Wednesday (19th December 2018).

A council report said: “Approval to dispose of the property was granted by this committee on June 27.

“Since obtaining approval to dispose of the asset the council’s commercial estates manager has been in discussions with CancerCare North Lancashire and South Cumbria.

“A provisional sales figure of £70,000 has been agreed. Although the property has not been formally marketed it is considered that a disposal to a charitable organisation such as CancerCare would benefit the town and people of Barrow.

“The commercial estate manager, therefore, seeks approval to dispose of the property directly and exclusively to CancerCare North Lancashire and South Cumbria at the agreed price.”

A decision will be made by the committee at its meeting next week.

The premises was last occupied by Furness Property Lettings and Management, which is now based at Roose Road.

The vacant building is situated just down from the Marmaris Grill and next to Cavendish House on the corner of Duke Street and Forshaw Street.
