CHILDREN from a Barrow school choir have been working hard in preparation for their performance at a popular Carol Service this week.

St James’ Church of England Junior Scholl will be performing at The Mail’s annual Christmas carol service.

The service will be taking place at St James’ church from 6.30pm on Wednesday.

The school choir has performed at the carol service a number of times in the past.

They will perform three songs, one alongside the church choir and two on their own.

Amanda Stephens, year five teacher at St James’ School, said: “The children’s choir has been performing at The Mail’s carol service for a few of years now.

“Children are excited to be performing their second concert of the year.

“There are 27 children currently in the choir.

“At the carol service, the children will be performing three songs.

“They will perform two on their own and another song combined with the Church choir.

“A set of hand chimers will also be performing on the night.”

A number of the children will be performing solos at the carol service.

Summer, age 10, is a year six pupil who will be performing one of the solos this year.

She said: “I’m very excited about performing a solo.

“I performed in The Mail carol service last year and really enjoyed it.

“This year, I will be performing Beneath The Stars.

“I’ve been in the choir for the last three years, joining in year three.”

Father Jack Knill-Jones, vicar at St James’, said it was important for the children to be involved in the annual carol service.

He said: “Links between the church and St James’ school are very close.

“We always look forward to having them, it’s a real joy.

“This year they will be performing alone as well as alongside the joint church choir.

“For myself and everyone at the church, it is a really important for us to be involved with the school and for them to be involved with what goes on at the church.”

This year the chosen charities for the Christmas carol service are Barrow Foodbank and St Mary’s Hospice.

Please join us on Wednesday for the service.
