Barrow AFC have bolstered their striking ranks ahead of their busy Christmas period by signing teenager Olly Dyson on loan from Premier League club Huddersfield Town.

Dyson, who turned 19 last Friday, has joined the Bluebirds on a work experience deal, meaning there is no fixed end date to his spell with them.

He will be available to play in Saturday’s away match against Solihull Moors, which is AFC’s first of four games in ten days, as they look to build on a promising run of form that has seen them pick up three wins from their last four league games.

Barrow manager Ian Evatt made the move to sign Dyson after losing top scorer Tyler Smith last Thursday when he was recalled by parent club Sheffield United a few weeks before his loan from the Blades was due to end.

Dyson has been in Huddersfield’s academy since joining them at under-nine level from Yorkshire junior side Normanton Athletic.

He actually joined the Terriers as a central midfielder, capable of playing in a holding player or in a more advanced role up the field.

Dyson first broke into the club’s under-18 team in 2015 and scored one goal in six starts and one substitute appearance in his maiden campaign playing at that level.

He began playing as a striker in the 2016/17 season, during which he progressed into Huddersfield’s reserve side, and he finished with a tally of seven goals in 24 games.

Unlike Smith, however, Dyson has played first-team football prior to his arrival at Holker Street, having spent part of the last campaign on work experience at Liversedge, where he scored five goals in as many games.

From there, he moved to the now-defunct Shaw Lane (who knocked AFC out of the FA Cup last season) in the New Year, where he experienced playing in the Premier Division of the Northern Premier League, the seventh tier of English football.

Evatt will be hoping Dyson will bring the same youthful exuberance and quality that Smith showed during his five months with the Bluebirds.
