THE story of public bus and tram transport in Furness is told in a new exhibition put together from the collections of the Barrow Archive and Local Studies Library.
It is called 130+ Years on Wheels and can be seen during normal opening hours in the central library at Ramsden Square, Barrow, until April 29.
Barrow's first tram ran in July 1885 and the Town Hall bought the system from British Electric Trams in 1920 for £96,250.
The council ran its first bus in August 1923 and rapidly expanded the fleet until on April 5 in 1932 it was able to shut down the worn-out tram system.
The library display boards also take a look at how the council’s bus fleet became Barrow Borough Transport in 1986 and immediately faced fierce price competition from Ribble Motor Services.
The transport display boards can be seen on Mondays to Thursdays from 9.30am to 6pm, Fridays from 9.30am to 5pm and Saturdays from 10am to 4pm.
