Barrow needed to to raise its profile to attract visits by big spending cruise ships, according to industry experts.

A pamper evening for women was being held at Crooklands Garden Centre, Dalton, to raise funds for St Mary's Hospice at Ulverston.

A semi-detached house in Jesmond Avenue, Barrow, was offered for sale at £190,000. A detached bungalow at Acacia Close, Barrow, was £189,950.

Plans to build a £6.5m residential care home somewhere in Barrow were approved by Cumbria County Council.

25 YEARS AGO

More than 30 people responded to an appeal for more volunteers to work on the phone lines for Barrow and South Lakeland Samaritans.

Ulverston's Church Walk playgroup was having to find a new base due to a baby boom and appealed to TV's Mr Blobby to help find them new premises. Leaders needed to find £8,000 for a mobile classroom. Mr Blobby was a regular on Noel's House Party, presented by Noel Edmonds.

A semi-detached house at Hare Lane, Barrow, was offered for sale at £34,500. A detached house at Manor Park, Barrow, was £115,000.

Furness MP John Hutton launched a new national campaign to raise awareness of asthma.
