HOW the Lake District played an unusual role in aircraft production during the Second World War is shown as part of an exhibition at Windermere library.
A range of pictures and artefacts shows how a site by the lake at Calgarth, near Troutbeck Bridge, was turned into a factory for the production of flying boats — with a village of red brick bungalows and hostels for workers.
At its peak in 1942, the factory employed 1,561 people and Calgarth had a primary school, two shops and a canteen.
The exhibition can be seen daily, except Wednesdays and Sundays, on the first floor gallery.
