BREXIT is unlikely to have any effect on Barrow Council, a meeting was told.

The Government has asked councils to assess if the EU withdrawal would impact on their services, particularly in the event of a no deal.

Barrow Council executive director Phil Huck told councillors that he believed any impact from Brexit was “very low” but said there could be a problem if the UK’s exit from the European Union is delayed.

Elections to the European parliament take place on May 23 which could leave town halls staging elections that they had not planned for. “Those elections would be at the time, of course, when we have our own council elections,” said Mr Huck. “In the event of a no deal Brexit I think the principle impact on this council will be a need for community information and reassurance, I don’t have a department for that, but it would be the role of councillors and officers.”
