PUPILS at Vickerstown School, Walney, had plenty of opportunities to dress up and find out about life and music throughout history in workshops held in the 1990s.

In 1992 pupils were dressed in costumes reflecting life in the late medieval and Tudor period.

Instruments in use then included the harp, hurdy-gurdy, bagpipes and sagbut.

The Mail on Saturday, October 24, in 1992 noted: “Rick and Helen Heavisides, known as Hautbois Musicians, spent two days with Vickerstown Primary School performing period music with pupil participation.”

The hautbois was the name used before 1770 for the woodwind instrument which later developed into the oboe.

In October 1997 the school was visited again by the Hautbois Musicians and youngsters found out about music enjoyed in the Victorian era.

They had the opportunity to try on costumes from the 19th century and perform traditional music and dances.
