Grange and Cartmel with John Edmondson

THIS is a contrasting walk from Grange-over-Sands to Hampsfell with stunning views over Morecambe Bay and the Lakeland Fells.

The walk continues to Cartmel village then skirts Allithwaite and finally explores Eden Mount before descending to Grange.

Start from Hampsfell Road car park, Grange-over-Sands.

1 Cross Hampsfell Road, turn right and walk to where the pavement ends. Turn left onto the path signed Routen Well and Hampsfell. Follow the uphill path through Eggerslack Wood following the signs for Hampsfell. Exit the wood and continue in the same direction to cross a wall stile. Turn right to walk along the direction of the wall to the hospice, a shelter built in 1845 with a viewfinder on its roof. Bear left to walk south, step down a limestone slab and continue across a wall stile and a tumbled wall. Branch right at a Y junction and turn right at a finger post to head towards Cartmel. Descend past trees then over a field to a black barn. Turn left onto a track bearing right onto a footpath into Cartmel. At the road, turn left then right onto Priest Lane and left onto a footpath around the abbey.

2 Walk through the square, then past the village hall to the car park. Continue along the bridleway ahead through gates on the path signed Cark and Holker Hall. Go through woods and fork left onto the public way signed Cark. Turn left onto the footpath by a white house (Low Bark Side) and cross a road right then left. Walk up to a wall, turn right then left through a gateway and uphill to cross a road. Walk up Templand Lane to the white Birkby Hall, turn left then right, up through a wood and across a field to a stile at the edge of a wood. Cross the next field to an opening on the left and walk alongside a hedge on the right. Turn right onto the road.

3 At Templand turn left, pass the farm and cross a road onto the path signed Grange and Lindale. Turn left onto Wart Barrow Lane. Pass the speed delimiter sign and fork right after a bench. Walk up the field past a holly tree by a fallen wall. Rejoin Wart Barrow Lane facing High Fellgate Caravan Site and turn right. Cross Cartmel Road and walk up Grange Fell Road past the golf club. Turn left up the lane to Spring Bank Farm. Fork right on the path signed Eden Mount and descend to pass the farm. Cross a stile and go up to a walled path behind houses. Turn left onto Ash Mount Road (signed Footpath) and left to Eden Mount Close. Follow a path from green electricity works buildings through woods descending to a wall gap. Turn left and continue to the top of the slope. Turn right to follow red waymarker arrows over Eden Mount to the viewpoint. Descend, turning left at green arrows to meet a main path. After passing Yewbarrow House turn sharp left towards Hampsfell House Hotel. Turn right down the footpath opposite the hotel drive then left at the next waymarker. Keep right then follow the path turning left, descending to Main Street next to the Community Orchard. Turn left and at the mini roundabout left onto Hampsfell Road where the walk began.
