YOU needed a head for heights and nerves of steel to take on the challenge of a bungee jump at Rampside, near Barrow, back in 1994.

The Mail, on Tuesday, May 3, noted: “More than 70 people queued up for their £39.50 taste of adventure, jumping from the top of a 170ft crane at the Wordsworth House Hotel.

“Some got their thrills simply by going for a £2 ride in the crane and looking down on the crowd as jumpers hurled themselves into the longest drop of their lives.”

Claire Birkett, of Main Street, Haverigg, said: “It’s brilliant. You get a good feeling when you’re going down.”

Darren Johnson, of Lyon Street, Barrow, was one of the jumpers raising money for Ulverston’s St Mary’s Hospice and the special care baby unit at Furness General Hospital.

The event was run by Robert Johnson for Best Bungee, of Aberdeen.

He said: “Only people aged more than 14 are allowed to jump and those who are aged between 14 and 16 have to have parental consent.

“They have to wear a full body harness for the jump.”
