A 13-year-old girl has died following a horrific crash in Cumbria.

She was one of three members of the same family travelling in the same car.

Another 14-year-old girl was also injured, while the female driver was airlifted to hospital with potentially critical injuries.

The crash happened just after 2.20pm yesterday at the crossroads outside the Crown Inn, at Broadfield Common, between Stoneraise and Ivegill near Carlisle.

There were three vehicles involved - a car, a Landrover and a van.

The family, who are from the local area, were travelling in a silver Citroen car.

They had to be cut from the badly-damaged vehicle by firefighters.

Police have this morning confirmed that a 13-year-old girl, who was a back seat passenger, died at the scene from her injuries.

The other teenager, a 14-year-old girl, was travelling in the front passenger seat.

She was taken to Carlisle's Cumberland Infirmary with minor injuries.

The driver, a 43-year-old woman, suffered life-threatening injuries.

She was flown to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle.

Her condition has this morning been described as "stable" by police.

The driver of the Landrover Defender, a 45-year-old man from west Cumbria, suffered minor injuries.

The driver of the red Mercedes Sprinter Homeserve works van, a 60-year-old man from Lancashire, was not hurt.

The Great North Air Ambulance said that two helicopters were sent to the scene, but only one was needed.

All roads approaching the crossroads were closed for over six hours as a result of the crash while collision investigation officers worked to determine the cause.

Police said specially-trained officers are supporting the families involved.

Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the crash to contact them on 101.
