An overflowing bin which people claim has not been emptied for several months is causing serious issues.

The bin on Channelside Walk in Barrow is overflowing with rubbish and animal waste and has been branded “beyond a joke” by Roose resident Joyce Herron,.

She noticed the inundated container while walking her dog last July and decided to contact the council for an explanation.

She said: “I was talking my dog for a walk near the dock museum last summer and noticed this bin was absolutely overflowing.

“Even though it was completely full, people were continuing to put their dog bags in it.

“I contacted the council but no-one has wanted to accept responsibility for this bin which is absolutely overflowing with rubbish.”

Since Mrs Herron’s complaint, the bin has been covered with a black bin liner, however, that has failed to deter passers by from piling more rubbish on the container.

Mrs Herron said: “The smell is absolutely awful, especially when we had that warm weather over summer.

“I just can’t believe people are still piling more dog bags on top of the bin when it’s already at full capacity.

“The area is only a narrow path too and people are actually avoiding that area because of the bin, it’s appalling.

“I’m absolutely exasperated by the lack of response from the council.

“This problem has not been dealt with properly.”

Leader of Barrow Borough Council, Dave Pidduck, said: “If that’s the case that this bin has gone unemptied for so long, I’m really angry about that.

“If members of the public see overflowing bins, they should always contact their council members and we’ll try and get something done.

“I shall be following this up first thing and attempt to resolve the problem.”
