CAMPAIGNERS striving to save a derelict lido have received another boost after being chosen to host a national conference.

The group Save Grange Lido has been chosen to host the 2019 National Lido Conference in September bringing together everyone from the lido community.

The event will take place on Saturday September 7 in the Victoria Hall in Grange and will include a visit to the lido.

Representatives from other lidos across the UK will come to share their passions for outdoor swimming that has seen a resurgence in recent years.

Darren Milby, co-chair of Save Grange Lido, said: “This is fantastic as it brings together all the major players from the lido community and all to here in Grange.

“When they arrive we will be able to show them around and share ideas with many people who have or are going through similar things as ourselves.

“It will also be a great way to really show off the lido’s potential and South Lakeland District Council have been very helpful is allowing us to show people around.

“To mark the occasion we are hoping to have some sought of display to show our future plans for the lido and will certainly help to raise awareness within the industry about what we are trying to do.”

Grange Lido opened in 1932 when such structures were a common feature across the country.

It consisted of a large salt water pool surrounded by attendant facilities such as changing rooms and a sun deck.

It proved extremely popular, but after period of decline and rising maintenance costs, the facility was closed in 1993 and has stood derelict since then.

However, the art deco lido was granted Grade II listed status in 2011 and in the same year, the Save Grange Lido group was formed.

Recent developments have seen them produce exciting plans for the future of the lido after engaging a leading specialist architect to draw up restoration plans.

The plans include a state of the art complex with a 50-metre six lane pool alongside, a heated 25m pool, a paddling and play pool, restaurant, sauna, steam room and shop.

Mr Milby also said that after the latest meeting with the South Lakeland District Council they have decided to repair the buildings and structures at the lido, but are still considering filling in the pool.

The restoration is believed to be taking place towards the end of the year.
