PARAMEDICS treated two people suffering from smoke inhalation after a fire broke out at a property in Barrow.

Shortly after 5pm on Tuesday (Feb 19) fire crews from Barrow and Ulverston attended a kitchen fire in one of the self-contained flats at Ramsey Park, a sheltered housing complex in Barrow.

Two people were found suffering from smoke inhalation and were treated as a precaution at the scene by paramedics.

The complex itself provides rented accommodation for over sixties and is made up of 57 self-contained flats.

After the fire broke out it was soon recognised by the automatic fire alarm system, which immediately alerted the Barrow fire service.

A firefighter from Ulverston fire station said: "The team from Barrow were first to attend the scene after they were initially alerted by the automatic fire alarm.

"Upon arrival the property was deemed heavily smoked logged and so they requested for additional resources to help extinguish the fire.

"We were then called out to assist."

On arrival crews found a fire in the kitchen of a ground floor flat and two casualties suffering from smoke inhalation.

An ambulance was then called and they were both treated at the scene as a precaution.

Crews used two breathing apparatus, one extinguisher, one hose reel jet and a positive pressure ventilation unit to extinguish the fire.

Crews were there for around forty-five minutes until it was deemed safe enough to leave.

Ramsey Park is ran by the national housing association Accent who were approached in the writing of this article, but were unable to provide a comment within the timeframe that this piece was published.
