THE England team has made a very successful start to qualifying for soccer's Euro 2020 championships so we are turning the clock back to 1999 to see how fans cheered on the national team in Furness.

A weekend match in November saw England beat Scotland by two goals to nil — with a place in the 2000 European Championships at stake.

The Mail, on Monday, November 15, noted: "The clash between the two bitter rivals ensured there wasn't a single seat to be had in any of the bars or clubs which showed the vital game.

"The electric atmosphere was a return to that which saw hoards of supporters pour into the pubs during last summer's World Cup in France."

Many fans arrived at pubs two hours before the match and many later arrivals had to stand or find room on the floor."

Two goals from Paul Scholes broke Scottish hearts.

The biggest cheer of the day came when TV cameras picked out a huge St George's flag in the crowd with Barrow AFC emblazoned across it.
