WHEREVER you go throughout the UK, there’s probably one word which boils the blood more than ‘Brexit’: that word is ‘vegan’. However, it’s hard to deny the vegan scene is exploding throughout the world.

In step Sweet Pepper Café, Barrow’s answer to this worldwide plant-based phenomenon.

As the town’s first vegan eatery, there was a lot of buzz around its promise of American BBQ.

Customers are greeted with a pleasant atmosphere and a clever interior design for its spacious main room, which comes with an additional quaint coffee area.

One look at the menu, I spotted the Bacwn Cheeze Burger, served with toppings and a side of chips. After hearing about this American BBQ selection, it would have been rude not to!

My partner went for a more Far Eastern delight by choosing the Thai Green Chickn Curry.

Unfortunately, I was disappointed – not with the café, but with myself. Reason? Because I doubted the café would deliver. How wrong I was. I can honestly say I’ve never had a better burger in my life. I even ate the pickle (and I hate pickles!)

Sat opposite me I was told of a similar experience. The Thai Green Chickn Curry was apparently a vessel to the South-eastern Asian country itself.

After eating the “best burger ever”, we tucked into (going out on a limb again) the best chocolate fudge cake ever – so good we ordered another couple of slices that weekend.

Overall, for a review it’s only fair to get a real account of a place after it’s been open to the public for about two months. That way, all the cracks are smoothed out and staff have made those much-needed learning curves. So, to turn around and say “the service was lagging” or “staff lacked in customer service” would be unfair. But as they say, taking constructive criticism from others is required to get to the next level.

When looking past all the pros and cons of why the public should eat at the venue – or avoid it – we can all agree it is nice to know Furness is not shunning the UK’s innovative vegan scene. In fact, it’s embracing it.

Even if you are not vegan – which is probably most of you reading this – get yourself down there.
