PEOPLE from the Furness peninsula have struggled to get home or fly out to holidays or appointments because of the chaos at airports.

Many have had their flights cancelled or delayed because of the air traffic control glitch on bank holiday Monday, one of the busiest flight days of the year.

The transport secretary Mark Harper called it the worst incident of its kind in 'nearly a decade.'

Although the organisation that provides services for ATCs, the National Air Traffic Services, said that the problem was resolved at 3.15pm on Monday there was a significant knock-on impact extending into Tuesday.

The PA news agency found that 63 flights out of 281 flights were cancelled on Tuesday in Manchester, the international airport that many people travelling from south Cumbria use.

According to these figures, it was the third worst-affected airport in the UK.

She is due for a dental appointment there today (August 30). Mrs Turner said that everything was cancelled after a two-hour delay.

She said: "They are sending a full refund but any other inconvenience like a train back and a night in Manchester will have to be claimed on insurance.

"I need to go out not for a holiday, I am having ongoing dental work and needed to be there for an appointment tomorrow."

Mrs Turner said that she was going to get another flight to Germany and then transfer there to Malaga in order to get her appointment.

Barrow Raiders fan Neil Kummer, who travelled to France to watch their game on Saturday, said: "Still stuck in Toulouse till Friday after flight cancelled on Monday."
