Cumbria Freemasons are orchestrating an event of national significance to mark an important historical occasion.

On June 6, 2024, they will host an event to commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day when the allied troops of World War Two landed on the beaches of Normandy.

To mark the occasion, a series of nationwide commemorative activities will begin 80 days before D-Day with Cumbria Freemasons presenting the final ten days.

In partnership with the esteemed Royal Pageant Master of Buckingham Palace, the Freemasons will take part in a memorial service commencing May 28.

Beginning at exactly 8am each morning, one of their esteemed members, Richard Cowie, will play the bagpipes in honour of Bill Millin, who continued playing to bolster morale whilst under German fire in 1944.

The tribute will start with a performance of the ‘haunting’ song Highland Laddie at various locations around Kendal.

To mark 80 years since more than 4,000 allied soldiers lost their lives on the beaches of Normandy, the Freemasons are also putting on a special event at Kendal Rugby club.

They are welcoming everyone to attend on June 6, and will kick off at 5pm with a commemorative parade, including more than 200 army personnel, veterans, and cadets as well as military vehicles, the Burneside Brass band, and a singer.

The lighting of a beacon at 9:15pm will join others in illumination nationwide and will be complemented by a mouthwatering feast of roasted succulent hog as well as live music, games, activities and a grand raffle.

Cumbria Freemasons said: “We are privileged to present the final 10 days—a truly remarkable opportunity! This unique opportunity is indeed a profound honour.

This event provides an opportunity to come together as a community, as we honour the bravery and sacrifice of those who fought on D-Day and celebrate their enduring legacy.

“Service lies at the core of Freemasonry, and our members contribute significantly with their time, resources, and expertise. This event is a prime example of our commitment to service, as we pay homage to a remarkable chapter in history.

“We warmly welcome everyone to join us for this memorable occasion.”

All proceeds will be donated to Armed Forces charities, with tickets available at £15 for adults and £8 for children under 13, which includes the hog roast.
