It was heartbreak at the weekend for Millom as they were beaten in golden point by Clock Face Miners in a thrilling National Conference League Division Three play-off final at Devonshire Road, writes Elliot Burrow.

The game was always going to be a tight one, with Millom winning one of the two regular-season meeting between the sides and the other being a draw.

Clock Face flew out of the blocks and took the lead on five minutes when James Jones touched down.

Millom responded immediately and two minutes later they also got their first try of the game, when full-back Ross Brookes backed up an Ethan Kelly break to score. Lee Postlethwaite converted as well

On 17 minutes, the visitors were awarded a penalty in front of the sticks for a ball steal and Jack Highcock stepped up to add the two points to pull the scores level.

The scores were not level for long though, as two minutes later impressive hooker Noah Robinson managed to find his way over. Postlethwaite added the extras.

Before half-time, Millom found themselves very fortunate as the visitors did score in the corner from a kick, but it was ruled out for offside and the Woolybacks led 12-6 at the break.

Millom’s day got better when on 46 minutes, Josh Comber was sin-binned for dissent and five minutes later the visitors had another try disallowed for a knock-on.

Clock Face did, however, break the Millom resilience on 53 minutes when Ian Nebster crossed. Highcock converted and the game was level once more.

The visitors had a third try disallowed on 57 minutes when they try scorer appeared to go in touch.

Drop-goals were then missed from both teams but with neither team being able to find one, the game entered golden point.

Both sides again created chances but sadly for Millom, it was the visitors who took advantage when Lewis Ball scored a try to end the home side’s promotion hopes.
