DALTON are aiming to encourage the next generation of rugby league players by spreading the word about ‘the greatest game’ in the town’s schools.

Coaches from the Kelland Park club’s mini and junior section are visiting the five schools in their catchment area as part of the Dalton Dragons School Programme.

Pupils from under-five to under-12 at Chapel Street Infants, Newton School and Dalton St Mary’s have already sampled the one-hour free sessions aimed at introducing them to the basics of rugby league.

It is a continuation of work which has seen Dalton’s mini-section grow over the past couple of years, with the hope being it continues to reap rewards for both them and the sport as a whole in the area.

“We are part way through the sessions and we have had a positive response from the schools and the children so far, and they seem to have been well received,” said Dalton coach Dave Pugh.

“The future plan is to arrange a similar session in each school to align to the new playing season in 2019 and then establish a future plan of sessions.

“A lot of children are unaware of the sport, but it’s a great team sport to get the children active and we encourage anyone to get in touch with their local club and give it a try.”
