GARETH Jones bagged six goals to help fire Dalton United up to third in West Lancashire League Division Two with an 8-0 victory over bottom side Longridge Town reserves.

Jones was in deadly form in front of goal, with Robbie McMurdo and Joe Fiddler on the scoresheet for the home side with one apiece as well.

Walney Island’s unbeaten run came to a halt as they lost 3-2 at home to Croston, who now lead the Division Two table.

Walney took the lead when Matt Lockley produced an excellent finish and should have extended the lead before half-time when James Bailey rounded the ‘keeper, only to miss the gaping net followed by Sam Clayton heading over from close range.

Croston found a way back into the game after the break when some indecision amongst the Walney defence saw the visiting striker react to finish well.

Walney regained the lead after Steve Brennan fired home a 25-yard free kick and the same player appeared to have the ball over the line minutes later, only for the referee to wave play on amid a goalmouth scramble.

To add insult to injury, Croston promptly went up the other end to level the game and then, with only minutes remaining, they completed the win.

Elsewhere in the Division, Jordan Hughes scored a stunning free kick to earn Furness Cavaliers a share of the spoils with a 1-1 draw away to Garstang reserves.

In the Premier Division, Vickerstown beat Coppull United 1-0 thanks to a Sean Paterson goal. The result sees Dave Round’s men move up to a very creditable eighth place in the table.

In Division One, Hawcoat Park beat bottom side Wyre Villa 3-1, with Patrick Allington, Elliott Moore and Carl Mackay all getting on the scoresheet.

Hawcoat move up to second in the table after that result.

Millom came from 2-0 down at home to league leaders Leyland United to snatch a point.

The game changed when Jamie Pattinson, returning from injury, was put into action around the hour mark. He scored Millom’s first and, in the last seconds of the game, had a hand in Carl Waters’ late, late equaliser.

Kieran Clark scored in vain for Crooklands as they lost 5-1 at Lostock St Gerards.

Meanwhile, Askam United threw away a two-goal lead at Eagley in a 3-3 draw. Callum Rayner (2) and Jordan Rayner were the Askam marksmen.

The other West Lancs game of the day saw GSK Ulverston Rangers held to a 1-1 draw away at Lytham Town.

Holker Old Boys went down 2-1 at AFC Darwen in the North West Counties League First Division North.

JP Stanway put Holker ahead, but they could not hold on and eventually lost out to a 70th-minute goal.
