Local football teams paid their respects on the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War with a minute’s silence before kick-off impeccably observed by players, officials and spectators at every game.

With the heavy overnight downpours on Friday, it was a race against time for club groundsmen to try and get pitches fit for 90 minutes of football and only a few survived the further rain that fell on Saturday morning.

At the ever-reliable Hawcoat Lane, Hawcoat Park and Crooklands Casuals locked horns in a West Lancs Division One clash that saw the home side run out convincing 4-0 winners.

Frankie Ellis, Joe Tindale, Mike Melia and a rare Martin Paterson goal securing maximum points for Hawcoat, who are second in the table and only a point behind leaders Leyland United with a game in hand.

Leyland stayed top thanks to their 4-1 home win over a dogged Millom, who took the lead through a Carl Waters strike, but were pegged back to 1-1 before half-time and eventually went down to three goals in the last 20 minutes.

GSK Ulverston Rangers are a team going quietly about their business and they have moved up to seventh in the table after a 3-2 away win at CMB.

Josh Cronin, Josh Bates and an own goal put the visitors 3-0 up before a late fightback by the hosts made for an interesting last 10 minutes.

A Callum Rayner goal couldn’t stop second-from-bottom Askam United losing out to bottom side Wyre Villa in a basement battle, as they fell to a 2-1 defeat.

In Division Two, honours were even in a tightly contested game at Tummerhill between Walney Island and Dalton United, which finished 2-2.

Walney twice took the lead, firstly through Matt Lockley and then Joe Pearson, only to be pegged back by a Gareth Jones penalty and a Robbie McMurdo strike. Both teams had a man sent off in a game which certainly wasn’t in that sort of category.

Only Two games survived the awful weather in the Premier Division of the Furness Premier League.

Bootle stay third in the table after putting seven past Britannia without reply, with Oliver Smith taking the match ball after bagging a hat-trick. Graham Hartley, Aaron Bradley, Connor Nuttall and Joe Capstick also got in on the goalscoring act.

Haverigg United and Holker Old Boys reserves shared a nine-goal thriller that saw Haverigg win 5-4. Sam Lightfoot, David Cook (2) and Jamie Hodgson scored for Holker, but it was a John Chmiel hat-trick, backed up by Luke Chmiel and Bradley Maine, that made sure the points stayed with the hosts.

Only one game took place in Division One with Askam United reserves hosting Vickerstown A. Vickerstown won 4-2 thanks to Andy Higginson scoring two goals against his former club, Stu Tippet and Phil Athersmith, who scored straight from a corner for the visitors.

Division Two action was limited to just one game as well and in the fixture, only an Andrew Warne strike for Coniston separated them and rock-bottom Haverigg United reserves.
