NAVY B remain top of the Barrow Friday League Knockout Cup table despite suffering a 16-13 defeat away to British Legion A.

Legion had led 13-3 at one point, starting with a whitewash in the snooker thanks to victories from one of the week’s treble-winners Dave Simpson, captain John Tyreman and Billy Burns.

Navy responded on the billiards table, starting with their Dave Simpson edging out Alan Fraser by just two points in the race to 100.

Paul Kyle and captain John Clamp completed the win for Navy, winning by 30 points against Steve Hetherington and Paul Fieldhouse respectively.

Navy had the edge on the oche too as they won the darts 4-3, but it started with Legion’s Dave Simpson winning the first game with a ton and checking out on 68, followed by Billy Bowes coming out of retirement to make it 2-0.

Navy’s Dave Simpson pulled one back and Ian Goodwin (140, 127, 100) won his match to level it up, only for Shaun McPoland to put the Legion back ahead.

However, Navy captain Dave Rafferty (140, 100) levelled the match and Andy Charnley (121) sealed the win.

It therefore came down to the welch don matches and Legion A were unstoppable there, taking all three matches to clinch overall victory.

They are joint-second with Vickerstown CC, who triumphed 19-11 at home to British Legion.

Treble-winner Josh Francis and Peter Scott got the Cricketers off to a good start on the snooker table, setting up a 2-1 win. Mike Smith pulled one back for Legion.

It was a similar story at billiards, with Gareth Willis and Scott helping the home side to a 2-1 win, and Kevin Quinn stopping the whitewash.

It was on the oche where Vickerstown really excelled though, winning six of the seven games. Willis, Brian Tucker (121, 2x100), David Holmes, captain Bob Crosthwaite, Francis and Scott were their winners, while captain Tony Woodward got one back for Legion.

Legion had the edge at welch don though, emerging 6-5 victors from the three games.

In the other cup match of the week, there was nothing to split Roose Cons and Barrow Football Supporters Club as they drew 13-13. Steve Redpath and Adam Cook earned BFSC a 2-1 win over the home side on the snooker table, with Nick Wilkes responding for Roose.

Roose were on form in the billiards though as Ray Cooney and Peter Roberts got there first in the race to 100, with Jimmy Wilson edging out Rob Chissim by 10 points to pull one back for BFSC.

The visitors were in dominant form at darts, taking six out of the seven games with wins for Mike Fletcher, captain Mike Edwards (100), Steve Martin (132), Denis Plant (126), Alan Bonner (138) and Barry Butterworth.

Roberts got a consolation win for Roose, who took the honours at welch don to level the match.

A 6-1 win at don included Roberts being part of a winning pairing, which made him the fourth treble-winner of the round.

The league resumes this Friday night.
