TOM Wilkinson has become the second Askam player to step up to the professional ranks with Whitehaven for the 2019 Betfred League One season after signing a deal with the West Cumbrians.

The 22-year-old loose forward’s move to the Recreation Ground comes less than a week after Askam’s goal-kicking hooker Sam Dowsett returned to the pro game after agreeing a contract with Haven.

Wilkinson is very highly thought of by Whitehaven assistant coach Jonty Gorley, who previously coached him at Lakes College.

“We played teams like St Helens and Tom was as good as anybody in the team,” said Gorley.

“He was playing hooker then and, being a former hooker, I’ve always had a soft spot for players in that position - but he had a lot more to his game.

“He’s turned from a nine to a 13 and is still the same 100 per cent player as he was then.”

For his part, Wilkinson is looking forward to the opportunity to play professionally and is eager to get going.

“I’m very happy to sign professionally for the club and I’m excited about getting started,” said Wilkinson.

“I will be looking at earning a position in the team and improving my game every week at a higher level.”

One Barrovian who will not be playing for Whitehaven next year though is Ellis Gillam, who has moved to Rochdale Hornets.

Last season’s young player of the year at the Recre will link up with former Haven player-coach Carl Forster at the Befred Championship outfit.

“The attraction of Championship rugby league brought me to Rochdale and I’m looking forward to getting started with my new team mates,” said Gillam.
