Ian Evatt has praised the character of Kyle Jameson, after the young centre-back overcame recent struggles with a fine performance against Wrexham in midweek.

Jameson, who is on loan from West Brom, was brought into the side against the Dragons for the suspended Dan Jones and helped the Bluebirds keep a second straight clean sheet in the 0-0 draw at Holker Street.

The 20-year-old showed great composure as part of a back three to put some difficult experiences in his previous two starts for AFC behind him.

It was Jameson’s own goal at Harrogate Town which triggered a second-half collapse in the 4-2 defeat, while his slip at Ebbsfleet United led to the home side scoring the only goal of the game.

Evatt said: “He showed great character because he made a bad mistake at Ebbsfleet, which cost us the game and he made a couple of mistakes at Harrogate which cost us the game.

“But on Tuesday, he came in and showed what an excellent player he is. He’s a fantastic player – I keep telling him that – in training I see a lot of good things in Kyle.

“It’s just about consistency now with him and that will come with experience.”

This afternoon sees Barrow take on Braintree Town, who are bottom of the National League table and seven points adrift of safety.

The Iron did, however, draw 2-2 with Sutton United, showing that they are a side that the Bluebirds can ill-afford to underestimate them.

But the visitors head to Essex with their form revived over the last week and with Evatt facing a tough choice about who to leave out, as he has almost a fully-fit squad to choose from.

Evatt said: “All of a sudden we’ve got competition in every position, more or less.

“We’ve got players to come back – Rhys Turner missed out on the squad in midweek, Matty Elsdon is back and he missed out on the squad and Dan Jones is back from suspension.

“It’s difficult to pick players at the moment, but that’s what I want and when you’ve got the shirt it’s important that you keep it and if you perform like you have done in the last two games, then there’s no reason why you can’t keep that shirt.”
