GEORGIA Stanway was named Senior Sportsperson of the Year at this year's GMB Mail South Cumbria Sports Awards.

The night at Hawcoat Park Sports & Social Club saw nearly 200 guests from a wide variety of sports in attendance to see the top adult and junior individual and team performers honoured for the success they enjoyed in 2018.

In addition to that, there were several others honoured for their services to sport down the years and the winner of the inaugural Go For Jo Award named.

Stanway, who recently signed a three-year contract extension with Manchester City, won the Senior Sportsperson award following a year which saw her star for both her club in the FA Women's Super League and at the Under-20 World Cup in France for England.

She beat off competition from cyclist Christina Wiejak and mixed martial arts fighter Ryan Thomas to claim the award on the night, which was collected by her mother Joanne on her behalf.

Stanway was unable to attend, but said: "I am honoured to win the award. It really means a lot, especially with the continued support from the local community.

"Congratulations to all of the award winners for the hard work they have put in for their achievements this year."
