England international Georgia Stanway is excited about being part of what looks like a bright future for women’s football in this country.

It’s been a big week for the Barrow-born 20-year-old Manchester City striker, who was called into the Lionesses squad for next month’s friendlies against Canada and Spain on Tuesday, four days after signing a new three-year contract with her club.

The women’s game is set to be in the limelight this summer with the Women’s World Cup taking place in France in June, in which England are regarded as one of the favourites to win.

It’s also growing at domestic level in England and has been boosted by the announcement of Barclays becoming the first title sponsor of the Women’s Super League next season as part of a £10 million deal.

Stanway: “Obviously, Barclays have come in and are supplying the finds which are necessary within the game and I think it’s just a massive step and you can see how much it has grown from the 2015 World Cup.

“It can only just keep growing and growing and we obviously want to get as many fans as we can to our game.

“Hopefully, the World Cup this summer will be a turning point as well because it’s so close – it’s only in France, it’s only a couple or hours away, so we can get a big crowd out there and the backing of the nation, following the men’s [World Cup].”
