A DECIDING-frame win for Kevin Quinn ensured British Legion won the Barrow Friday League billiards crown for the 18th year running as they defeated clubmates British Legion A 2-1 in a play-off.

The teams had finished level on points at the top of the table following the final round of league matches, necessitating a play-off.

Allan Edmondson and Tony Macmillan were first up, and the opening game proved to be a cagey affair as the lead changed hands with both players making breaks in the teens.

However, Edmondson began to pull away as the game progress and was the first to 100, winning by 35 points in the end.

Paul Fieldhouse got Legion A back on level terms in his match with Colin Taylor, which saw the duo evenly matched for much of the game.

They were tied at 87-87, but it was Fieldhouse who went on to win the race to 100 thanks to a late rally which saw him clinch victory with a break of 13.

That meant it all came down to the match between Quinn and Billy Burns, with little to choose between either player again.

Quinn had established a 15-point lead by the midway point and made an important break of 10 to take him into the 90s.

Burns kept plugging away, but could only watch as Quinn made two pots to clinch the match 100-84 and make certain of Legion retaining the title.

The other play-off saw Navy Club and Roose Cons facing each other to decide the third-place finisher in the welch don competition. Two 2-0 wins and picking up a point in a 2-1 defeat saw Navy Club edge the match 5-4.

This Friday sees the league leaders play the fourth-placed teams at British Legion.
