LAST Sunday, the Bootle Scrambles club moved from their traditional home on the Fell Green courses a few miles south to the Po House area in Whicham Valley for their annual Presidents Trophy trial.

Club members Joel Gowan and his girlfriend Jane Daniel had laid out the usual three routes for competitors to contest; the Hard, the Green, and the Clubmans.

This event counted towards the Northern Centre Championships, so sadly the schedule could not cater for any beginners this time. A good turnout of riders tackled four laps consisting of 10 sections per lap in cold, but dry, conditions.

Seascale’s ‘Team Brice’ again featured, with dad Darren proving the master on the Hard course by repeating his success at last month’s Barrow & District Motorcycle Clubs event. He won by a clear 15 marks on his Beta from Kendal’s Will Brockbank, also on a Sherco.

Rapidly gaining experience further down the field, son Cameron Brice finished in a creditable 11th.

Darren’s brother Simon finished third on the Green course on his Beta, where the victor was Stuart Gaskell, from Keswick, also Beta mounted. He was a mere six marks up on Tom Hodgson, from Kendal, on yet another Beta.

A close tussle on the Clubmans route saw Kendal’s Anthony Brockbank and Swarthmoor’s Mark Barrow tying on 25 marks, but as Brockbank cleaned more sections, he was adjudged the winner. Veteran Angus Jenkinson from Ulverston also put up a good performance on the Green route on his Vertigo finishing not too far behind Barrow in third slot.

As always the club would like to thank all the landowners and officials who gave up their time to make the event possible.

* ASKAM schoolboy moto-cross rider Jamie Keith demolished the opposition last weekend on the Preston Docks track last weekend, taking six wins from six races at the 90 Racing Moto-X Club's event on his 65cc KTM, again prepared by Barrow's MBR Racing and supported by Liquid Moly Oil.

Some lighting starts saw him get the holeshot in each of his races leaving the opposition fighting for second place.

Meanwhile, in the larger B-class events, Askam's Ben Southward and Barrow's Jamie Leake renewed their friendly rivalry. Ben gained a fifth and Jamie a sixth in their three-race programme, placing them both in the top 10.

This weekend, the moto-cross scene moves even nearer to home with the Cumbria MX clubs two-day event at Haverigg today and tomorrow. Maybe see you there?

* GUY Martin, the former TT rider and holder of many bizzare world records and now a popular TV personality, has fallen foul of the press again.

After surviving a huge 160 mph crash at the TT in 2015, another at the Ulster Grand Prix a couple of years later and yet another at the TT in 2017, Guy announced his retirement from the sport.

However his interest is obviously still there and he provisionally entered his own Triumph Triple in the Classic race at the Cookstown 100 on April 26 and 27. Unfortunately, the media made a big issue of Guys comeback and thousands of his fans are now likely to attend. He would have preferred news of his entry to be held off until nearer the date so as not to disappoint his fans or the club if his TV commitments prevented him going.

Let's hope he makes it.

* THE organisers of the revived Barbon Speed Hill Climb have finally been given the go-ahead.

The ACU have, at last, approved documentation. Although cars have continued to compete there for many years, the last motorcycle event took place back in 2011.

Members of the Westmorland Motor Club have been working feverishly for many months to get the event reinstated.

In its heyday, the 890-yard course counted towards the British Championships, attracting large crowds and competitors from all over the UK.

The date is set for Saturday, May 11, and the venue is just off the A683 Kirkby Lonsdale to Sedburgh road and is well-signposted.

Entries are filing up fast so if you do intend to compete, enter online at https://www.ride-acu.uk/Secure/Events/Search.aspx.
