Three of South Cumbria’s best up-and-coming rugby stars figured prominently in a match against Wales.

Dan Knott from Dalton, Roose player Tom Farren and Joshua Blinkhorn from Millom RLFC are part of an England lions under 18's development squad.

On Sunday September 17 they travelled down to Leigh where England Under-18s beat Wales 32-16.

The Lion’s made sure to see a strong start to the match with a flying lead, establishing a 12-0 lead with tries from Dylan Grears and Luke Sutcliffe, which were then converted by Harley Nelson.

Harrison Doe scored an unconverted try for Wales before half time, but the second half quickly turned in favour of the Lions as Josh Blinkhorn and Devan Sharp from Wath Brow made a try each.

Wales saw a try from Alex Banks which was converted by Llewellyn Hawkes, but England finished strongly as Josh Blinkhorn scored a third try, completing a hat-trick.

After the game, Josh Blinkhorn was awarded Man of the match while winning the title of top Try scorer of the test series against Wales, Scotland and Ireland with six tries.

"It's always tough when playing against Wales," Dan Knott said, "As they always come with lots of passion and never give in.

"It was quite a warm day, meaning we all had to work extra hard and the wind made it a bit of a challenge to catch kicks."

All three promising young players have featured in four test matches for the England Lions while playing for Furness Raiders and their home clubs.

They will reprise their positions with the Lions on Wednesday November 4 for a test match with Brazil Men’s team at Pilkington Recreation Ground at 2pm.

"I'm sure it will be a tough game," Dan said, but he is looking forward to the challenge.

The Team are gearing up for the under 19’s European championship 2024 against Europe’s elite.

They hope to keep up with the legacy of former England Lions, who won in 2022. The team featured Jack Newbegin and Rio McQuistin from Millom RLFC, who are now part of the Lion’s under 23’s squad.
